In the Hundred Acre Wood, Winnie the Pooh, a honey-loving bear, starts his day with a light round of exercises to sharpen his appetite and set his sights on a fresh pot of honey.
When he checks his cupboard, Pooh finds his last jar of honey is gone. A quick glimpse of a passing bee sparks the plan to climb a nearby honey tree, but his first attempt ends in disappointment and a rumbling appetite that won’t be quieted.
Unwilling to quit, he visits his best friend, Christopher Robin, and the boy lends him a balloon. With the balloon tied to his waist, Pooh toys with the idea that it might lift him up to a hidden throne of sweetness, all while he rolls through a muddy puddle to appear like a “little black rain cloud” to fool the bees.
The disguise fails when the bees see through the ruse and angrily chase Pooh and Christopher Robin away, leaving them a bit wiser and a lot hungrier.
Still hungry, Pooh heads to see Rabbit, who reluctantly invites him in and, in a playful rush, Pooh greedily devours all the honey inside Rabbit’s house. The trouble starts when Pooh tries to leave: he discovers he’s grown too fat to fit through Rabbit’s front door.
Rabbit, in a flurry, fetches help, and Owl is brought into the plan, while Gopher tries to dig Pooh out from the front, though the attempt proves unsuccessful. The moment becomes sticky not just with honey, but with the realization that Pooh must stay put until he is thin enough to squeeze through once more.
To pass the time, Rabbit pretends to help by decorating Pooh’s bottom, all while carefully policing any bite of food that might tempt him. After days of this strange stalemate, Rabbit senses a slight movement and calls Christopher Robin and the rest of their friends to the scene. With a communal effort, they tug and push at Pooh from both inside and outside, but the stubborn bear remains lodged.
Frustrated yet determined, Rabbit steps back for a running start and, with a confident shove, sends Pooh shooting into the air. He lands headfirst into the hole of another honey tree, and the sudden disruption drives the bees far away, leaving the group astonished but relieved. Everyone offers to try freeing him again, but Pooh—ever hopeful—admits he doesn’t mind being stuck a little longer, because now he can indulge in honey to his heart’s content.
