The pampered white poodle Monsieur Cognac slips away from his young mistress Mademoiselle Giselle Ponchon and disappears into the streets of Paris as night falls. He isn’t simply roaming; he heads for the city’s nightlife, drawn to the jazz bars and the chance to watch the poodles performing on stage. This early escape kicks off a chain of comic misadventures that pull everyone into his orbit.

At a Paris jazz bar, American Terry Williams performs with his combo. Cognac samples a drink from one of the musician's cups, but his real interest is the pretty poodles on the program. The dog teams up with Terry for a wild pub crawl, gets drunk, and even turns green from the excess.

The following morning, Giselle, her father, and the police descend on Terry's apartment to arrest him for dog-napping Monsieur Cognac. Terry protests his innocence, while Cognac seems to be playing a clever, injured dog to gain sympathy. The arrest marks a rocky start to a saga fueled by mischief and romance.

Despite the chaos, Terry and Giselle fall in love and marry. The wedding infuriates Giselle's father and Monsieur Cognac, who become wary of the union. The dog’s jealousy grows, and he begins plotting to disrupt the couple’s happiness.

To secure a quiet wedding night, Terry tries to drug Monsieur Cognac with a powdered sleeping pill in the champagne. The dog, always sharp, detects the ruse and switches the glasses, leaving Terry to fall asleep instead. The ruse fails, and the tension between dog and husband intensifies.

The next day, Terry attempts a private 'handshake' peace gesture with Giselle, hoping to smooth over the earlier trouble. Cognac, in his scheming fashion, squeaks loudly, prompting Giselle, her father, and her uncle to rush in, assuming that Terry has harmed the dog. Terry visits his musician friends and learns that Monsieur Cognac is missing a Madame Cognac to accompany him. He decides to introduce him to Madam Poupée, a charming white female poodle who sometimes appears at the jazz bar. The plan is to bring Poupée into the TV world where Giselle is recording with Cognac.

Terry borrows Madam Poupée and smuggles her onto the set where Giselle is recording with Monsieur Cognac. The scheme hinges on the dogs' presence to rekindle the romance, but the atmosphere grows tense as cameras roll. The plan transforms the domestic caper into a studio-wide comedy.

Poupée's owner appears and accuses those present of kidnapping her dog, triggering a chaotic showdown as the poodles run riot through the studio. The accusation sets off a flurry of barking, confusion, and scrambling stars, threatening to derail Giselle's TV shoot. The studio erupts in a circus of fur and friction.

Amid the pandemonium, the tension between Terry and Giselle melts into a recognition of their love. The misunderstandings are resolved as the couple confronts the dog’s antics together. Their kiss finally breaks through the studio’s chaos, right in front of the TV cameras.
