Tale of a Dog

In a quiet town, Buckwheat Billie Thomas runs into his friend Big Shot Jones Cordell Hickman in the train yard, where Big Shot is brooding over a difficult choice. His father has ordered him to get rid of his dog, and rather than turning the animal over to the pound, Big Shot plans to smuggle the dog onto a train headed for Alabama. Buckwheat refuses to go along with such a plan and instead convinces Big Shot to let the gang adopt the dog, whom they rename Smallpox—a more dramatic title than the plain “Spot.” This moment sets the stage for a neighborhood-wide misadventure that will test trust, rumor, and community bonds.

But the situation spirals the moment Froggy [Billy Laughlin], Mickey [Robert Blake], and Janet [Janet Burston] overhear Buckwheat and Big Shot’s scheme to spring a surprise with Smallpox. Fearful of a danger they don’t fully understand, they warn everyone and alert the Greenpoint Board of Health, triggering a wave of alarm that sweeps through the town. A palpable panic grips Greenpoint as parents fret for their children and neighbors scramble to figure out what’s really going on, and Buckwheat, Big Shot, and the rest of the kids find themselves suddenly isolated from the adults who once kept watch over them.

The tension deepens when Buckwheat and Big Shot are stared down by the consequences of their actions. A miscommunication—accentuated by Buckwheat’s mother misunderstanding the situation and treating her child as if he’s “on ice”—heightens the sense that something dangerous lurks beneath a simple pet. It isn’t until a local doctor, Dr. Parkson [Emmett Vogan], speaks with Buckwheat and clarifies the truth: the term Smallpox refers to a dog, not the disease, and the alarming scare is revealed to be a hoax. The city’s mayor then steps in to address the mess, lecturing Froggy, Mickey, and Janet about spreading unverified rumors and sending them on their way.

With the danger defused, the gang chooses to adopt Smallpox after all—but they agree to rename him to Spotty, hoping to soften the initial scare while still keeping the dog close. The moment is bittersweet and funny, a reminder of how quickly fear can morph into action and how easily a community can redirect its energy toward care rather than chaos. Spotty, in a playful turn, looks toward the audience and communicates in a lively, mouth-wagging moment of charm and mischief.
