Weeds on Fire

Lu Kwong-Fai, the school principal, secures District Board funding to start the territory's first Chinese teenage baseball team. He recruits Lung, Wai and eight other troubled students from Kei Kok College. He enforces strict discipline to teach them teamwork and how to channel their energy into sport.

Wai is chosen as the Shatin Martins' pitcher and takes pride in his role. He begins to belittle his teammates, sowing resentment within the squad and signaling the start of a fractured team dynamic.

In the Little League opener, Wai starts a fight with a rival team. Lu publicly replaces him with Lung, exposing Wai's temper and triggering his exit from the team.

Feeling betrayed, Wai withdraws from baseball and school and returns to gang activities. He also abandons his pregnant girlfriend, Tsz-Ching, worsening the team's morale and stakes.

Lung is initially angry with Lu but eventually reconciles with him. The team continues to train under Lu's strict discipline, determined to prove themselves.

With the departure of Wai, the remaining members band together, train harder, and win enough to qualify for the final. The team learns to work as a unit despite earlier fractures.

Lung's family life fractures as his mother has an extramarital affair. He also learns Ling has a boyfriend and discovers Wai's involvement in illegal acts to fund Tsz-Ching's abortion. These events test his resolve before the big game.

Lu Kwong-Fai reminds Lung that a single half-step on the pitcher's mound could decide the team's fate. The reminder sharpens Lung's focus as the final approaches.

In the final against the Japan-based Buffaloes, the Shatin Martins fall behind early. Wai cannot be there to support them due to a dangerous mission. Lung is struck by a pitch but chooses to stand up and lead by example.

The Shatin Martins surge from behind and win 13–12, becoming the first Hong Kong team to claim the championship. Wai survives his injuries and is cared for in hospital, while Lung proves his resilience.

Lung learns to adapt to changes, inspired by his father and Tsz-Ching. Lu remains unmarried and dedicates himself to education and baseball, shaping the team's enduring legacy.

To honor the historic title, the government names a bridge over the Shing Mun River after the Shatin Martins, cementing their place in local memory.

On the eve of the 30th anniversary, Lung visits the Admiralty Occupy Site during the Umbrella Movement and recalls the team's spirit of never giving up hope.
