We Are the Best!

In 1982 Stockholm, a trio of teenage outcasts forms an unexpected alliance. Bobo, Klara, and Hedvig come together with a shared passion for punk rock and a desire to confront the music scene dominated by dismissive boys.

As they strive to create music together, the members of the band confront their individual struggles. Bobo seeks refuge in punk rock, Klara channels her anger and political beliefs, while Hedvig grapples with her faith amidst her musical journey.

The girls persuade Hedvig to join their band for the upcoming school talent show. Her classical guitar skills blend well with their punk style, giving them a unique sound that sets them apart from their peers.

Hedvig faces familial conflict when her mother disapproves of her punk-inspired haircut. This situation forces the girls to confront the limits of their rebellion against parental authority while maintaining their commitment to their music.

The girls organize an attempt to raise funds at the railway station, which does not go as planned. Their failure leads to humorous yet awkward moments, showcasing the ups and downs of trying to pursue their musical ambitions.

They meet Elis, a charming young musician who becomes both a friend and a subtle rival. His presence complicates their dynamics as each member navigates their feelings of camaraderie and competition.

Hedvig surprises everyone with her talent on the electric guitar, surpassing her instructor's skills. Meanwhile, Bobo grapples with frustration at her drumming progress, highlighting the challenges of musical collaboration.

The girls are excited when they book a performance with the band Iron Fist in Västerås. Their anticipation quickly turns to anxiety as they prepare to face their first big audience.

During their performance, the audience responds with hostility and heckling. In a moment of inspiration, Klara adapts their song to mock the town, igniting a riot that redirects the attention of Iron Fist toward the girls.

On the bus ride back to Stockholm, the girls celebrate their newfound camaraderie. Despite skepticism from a youth club worker, they choose to embrace their success and revel in their journey together.

The film ends with a light-hearted scene of Klara's father playing the clarinet while sitting on the toilet. This quirky moment serves as a reminder of the unexpected ways music can connect people and bring joy.
