During a 1050 raid on a Normandy monastery, the Vikings discover a wolf cub hidden behind a locked door they believe conceals treasure. They seize the cub and haul it to Norway, treating it as an unconventional prize rather than wealth. The discovery hints at a dangerous legacy that will echo through the centuries.

On a Viking ship bound for Norway, the cub accompanies the crew as a silent omen. By the time the vessel reaches the Norwegian coast, all the raiders have been killed by the wolf, which then flees into the wilderness. The ship's grim fate marks the cub's escape as the birth of a fearsome predator.

In present-day Nybo, 17-year-old Thale Berg moves into a new home with her family after her mother Liv joins the local police. Thale resents her mother's career and mourns her father's death, while her sister Jenny remains the only close family member she trusts. The move sets the stage for their strained, but necessary, family dynamic.

Thale attends a party with friends in the woods by the bay. When Elin Gran is attacked by a creature, Thale tries to help, but she herself is wounded as the beast drags Elin away. Jonas and the others are left shaken as police and paramedics rush to the chaotic scene.

The autopsy on Elin confirms that a large beast was responsible, though it can't be determined whether it was a wolf. The case draws in veterinarian expert William Nordvaag to help, while a mysterious one-armed man named Lars Brodin warns Liv that the killer is a werewolf and leaves her a silver bullet.

Mayor Tove Gran vows vengeance and orders a hunting party to track down the beast. Liv and chief Eilert Sundas lead the effort with a tracking dog, while Thale begins to experience strange dreams and sharpened senses; Thale's sister Jenny notes sleepwalking.

The hunting party finds a headless body and follows its trail to an abandoned mine. Inside the mine, the beast attacks, killing two hunters and a dog and seriously wounding Eilert. Liv confronts the creature at the mine's top, where the wolf lunges, forcing Liv to retreat.

Liv realizes the lead bullets have no effect on the beast, and only the silver bullet Lars gave her can kill it. She shoots the wolf with the silver bullet, ending its threat, and is later treated for injuries while learning that Eilert remains in a coma.

At a viewpoint, Jonas invites Thale to meet, and the pair share a kiss, only for a full moon to transform Thale into a more animalistic version of herself. She loses control and kills Jonas before anyone can stop her.

Lars reveals that once transformed, a werewolf loses humanity and that the only cure is to kill the entire bloodline. He later returns to the hospital and shuts down Eilert's life support, escalating the crisis.

Thale, now fully transformed, rides a night bus toward Oslo; the full moon breaks through the clouds as the bus enters a tunnel and Thale attacks the passengers. The bus crashes, and survivors report a wolf attack at the scene.

William confirms the wolf contains human DNA, proving this is a werewolf case and that Thale herself may be the new werewolf. Liv realizes the danger to her family and the town.

Thale returns home, still in werewolf form, and corners Jenny; Arthur drives away with Jenny in a van, but they crash on a bridge near a crowded pub. Thale gives chase through the city, leaving a trail of destruction in her wake.

In a store under construction, Liv, William, and Lars confront Thale; Lars is killed during the standoff, and Liv uses a tranquilizer to subdue Thale while Jenny helps hold Thale down.

Thale is kept at a veterinary clinic while Liv contemplates whether to shoot her with a silver bullet. The final moment leaves Thale's fate ambiguously unresolved.
