Peter, baptized in salt water as a “sea child,” dreams of the sea despite his family’s push for a land life. He befriends the eccentric Princess Paloma, later institutionalized, and admires his teacher Miss Balsibie before learning of her affair. The loss of his grandfather’s ship dampens his optimism, yet he clings to his dreams, ending on a hopeful note.
