The film probes cinematic representation and offers a critical portrait of Franco‑era Spain through intense montage of attractions and Brechtian devices. Built from fragmented, sometimes archival footage, it creates resonant, unfinished déjà‑vu scenes. Critics note its subversion of narrative expectations, echoing Rossellini’s realism. Portabella places Christopher Lee in a dream‑like Barcelona, creating his most structurally complex and fiercely poetic political work.
