Larry Stevens is facing eviction from his landlady Lillie Eckleberger because he cannot pay his rent. This desperate financial situation is what makes the discovery of the torn $1,000 bill so significant to him, it represents a way out of his immediate problems.

The money originated from gangster Bonelli, who was distributing large amounts of cash to his associates from an upper floor. One of his angry girls, upset with Bonelli, tore the bill in half and threw it out the window. The torn halves then drifted down to the street where Larry and Julia happened to be passing by.

Julia Wayne owes $500 to someone, creating an urgent debt she must repay. This financial obligation is why she becomes interested in the torn bill, she sees it as a way to settle her debt and pursue her dream of performing in a show.
