Truth or Dare

Olivia Barron plans to spend spring break building houses with Habitat for Humanity. Her best friend Markie Cameron convinces her to join their friends on a trip to Mexico. The plan sets up the group dynamics and the looming decision Olivia must make about putting others first.

In a bar, Carter lures the group to an abandoned church for a party. He reveals they will play a supernatural version of truth or dare. He warns that they must complete dares or face deadly consequences.

During the game, Tyson Curran reveals that Olivia has a crush on Lucas Moreno, Markie's boyfriend. Olivia denies it to avoid trouble and further complicate the group’s dynamics. The revelation heightens the sense that the game controls their fates.

The group learns online about Giselle Hammond, a former participant who lit a woman on fire in Mexico during a truth or dare. Only Giselle and Carter survived that version of the game. Carter explains that he recruited more players to buy time between turns.

Giselle reveals that her friend Sam Meehan got drunk and trashed the church. When they returned home, the game continued and only she and Carter survived. Carter admits he was forced to involve more players to buy themselves time.

Giselle is dared to kill Olivia and fires, but Penelope Amari dives in front and dies instead. Giselle’s own dare fails and she is forced to kill herself.

Olivia is dared to have sex with Lucas. During the act, Lucas confesses that he cares for her but loves Markie, complicating Olivia’s feelings and the stakes of the game.

Olivia and Lucas drive to Tijuana to seek Inez Reyes, a former nun who cannot speak. By writing on paper, Inez explains how she summoned the demon Calux to save herself from an abusive priest.

Inez describes Calux’s power and how she kept the demon in check by ritual, sealing his tongue in a pot. She warns that Sam Meehan’s fate may be tied to Calux’s return to the game.

Brad is dared to threaten his father with a gun. An approaching officer shoots him, ending his life. Olivia learns Carter and Sam are the same person, revealing a deeper conspiracy within the game.

Olivia dares to speak the truth, revealing that Markie’s father sexually assaulted her and killed himself afterward. Markie forgives her friend, recognizing that the past trauma contributed to their current peril.

Olivia, Markie, and Lucas locate Sam and force him back to the ruined church. Lucas is dared to kill Olivia or Markie; he refuses, and Calux possesses him to kill Sam and himself.

As Markie’s turn arrives, Calux possesses her to demand a deadly choice. Olivia pushes Calux back into the game by forcing him to pick truth or dare, and Calux admits there is no escape while Sam is dead.

Olivia uploads a warning video about the game’s rules and then uses a truth or dare prompt to pull in more players. By drawing in outsiders, she delays their next turn and buys time for herself and Markie.
