Orphan Chim‑Ae is rescued from wartime chaos by monk Mu Bul Dang of Seo San Temple and entered into the priesthood, training in mountaineering asceticism. His final test to inherit the abbot’s mantle is to form a bond with Myo‑Hyang of Ni Am cottage. While he rejects desire, the monk discerns their love, exposes Chim‑Ae’s transgression, and returns both to ordinary life.
