Working with children gave Barskaya superb direct sound and an inventive, non‑conformist visual style. The film shuns conventional syntax, radiating the chaotic, rebellious spirit of early Soviet cinema that Langlois likened to Vigo’s *Zero de conduite*. Though made with and for kids, it delivers a layered critique of Western society, reconstructing pre‑Nazi Germany and using the children’s play to mirror class struggle and the absurdities of adult behavior.
