The film looks back at New York’s nightlife in the ’40s and ’50s, when Toots Shor’s West 51st‑Street saloon was the city’s premier gathering spot. Director Kristi Jacobson profiles her grandfather, the legendary proprietor praised by Edward R. Murrow as the owner of America’s greatest saloon. The documentary recounts how politicians, gangsters, athletes and stars such as Frank Sinatra, Jackie Gleason, Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, Dwight Eisenhower and others made regular appearances over three decades.
