What Happens in Toby: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Toby (2023) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Sampath, a newly appointed SI, begins his duty at the Tamas Katte police station. When Jenny arrives, creating a scene over her missing foster father Toby, Sampath decides to look into the case. He consults Kushalappa, who leads him to a string of people connected to Toby’s life and troubles.

One stop is Fr. Iglesias, who explains that Toby had lost his voice in a past incident and had ended up in a remand home. Iglesias notes that he helped Toby get released and even attempted to secure him a job at the church, but Toby had already become a headache for him. Another important encounter is with Savithri, a sex worker who opens up about her love life with Toby and the circumstances that forced her to marry someone else.

Sampath also talks to Damodhara, a mortuary worker, who recounts his friendship with Toby. Through Toby’s neighbor Shalini, Sampath learns that Toby was often used as an assassin by village chief Anand, and that Anand had impregnated Jenny to secure Toby’s release from prison for Anand’s crimes. Toby, believing that Prashantha was the father, suspects Jenny’s pregnancy and tries to kill Prashantha after Anand instructed him to do so, but Jenny intervenes and reveals the truth. With this new understanding, Toby resolves to reform and goes out to find Prashantha to apologize.

After Sampath leaves, Shalini reunites Toby with Prashantha and reveals that Jenny has been searching for him all along. The danger escalates when Ananda and his men launch an attack on Toby and Prashantha, sending them to the hospital. Shalini learns from a doctor that Jenny had taken a surgical knife in a bid to kill Ananda, but Ananda killed her and disposed of her body in a meat grinder. An awakened Toby learns of Jenny’s fate and confronts Ananda at a fair. A brutal battle unfolds, and Toby decapitates Ananda, avenging Jenny’s death. In the aftermath, Sampath shoots Toby, who dies from his injuries, closing a tragic chapter of vengeance and redemption.
