In the northern Marseille suburb of Estaque, wedged between oil‑refinery smokestacks and the Mediterranean, a quirky cabaret shelters a cast of die‑hard characters: José, a generous gypsy bar‑owner who loves cars and women; his aging wife Joséfa, the club’s stripper; Marie‑Sol, who climbs daily to Notre‑Dame de la Garde praying for a child; her husband Patrick, long‑unemployed but kind; their friend Jaco, burdened by mortgage arrears and despised by his wife and daughters; and Papa Carlossa, who clings to the fantasy that Franco still reigns over Spain and dreams of overthrowing him.
