An orphaned girl works in a maternity‑home archive to discover the mother who abandoned her; when she meets her, she befriends her and then throws her into the sea. An aging intellectual tries to explain the “abomination of her lumpen existence” to the neighbour’s five‑year‑old daughter, who, upset for her mother, poisons him with arsenic.
