In a nameless, fantastical city ruled by the Three Fat Men, Viktor Sergachyov as Razdvatris and his fellow rulers preside over a harsh, inequitable world where the people dream of a different future. A traveling caravan of performers rides into town just as a miners’ uprising flares up in the streets. Among the troupe is the clown Augustus, the acrobat Aleksey Batalov as Tibul, and the young girl Lina Braknyte as Suok, their arrival bringing a glimmer of color and possibility to a city hungry for change. Tibul immediately throws himself into the rebels’ cause, but the initial spark of revolt is swiftly crushed by the military might of General Karaska, played by Pavel Luspekayev.
The conflict intensifies when a bombardment from the palace disrupts the rebels’ momentum and damages the heir Tutti’s lifelike doll—a mechanical child who is more than a mere toy to the ruling class. In the midst of the chaos, the rebel leader Prospero is captured and brought to the palace as part of a triumphal celebration, a move that underscores the precarious balance between rebellion and power. The doll’s damaged form becomes a symbol of both vulnerability and opportunity as the story threads onward.
Meanwhile, Tibul seeks safety with the help of Dr. Gaspard Arneri, a renowned scientist who aids him in disguise. That very night, Arneri is called to the palace to repair the doll and is entrusted to return with it under tight guard. Fate takes another turn when a rebel ambush unintentionally targets the carriage bearing the doctor, and the horses bolt away with the carriage and the damaged doll. In a chance encounter, Arneri stumbles upon Augustus’s caravan and reunites with Tibul, reigniting the plan to strike at the heart of the palace. It is then revealed that Suok bears a striking resemblance to the doll, and Tibul devises a bold scheme: Suok will impersonate the repaired doll to infiltrate the palace.
The ruse unfolds as Suok, wearing the repaired doll’s disguise, is delivered to Tutti’s chambers. The lonely boy senses something is amiss but chooses not to reveal the deception, a choice that buys the group time and complicates the palace’s interior politics. Suok seizes a crucial advantage by recovering the key to the royal prison and frees Prospero, a daring act that shifts the balance of power once more. Yet the ruse does not stay hidden for long—the real doll is discovered elsewhere, and the deception is laid bare.
Arrest and impending execution loom over Suok and Dr. Arneri, tightening the noose around those who dared to challenge the Fat Men. Yet the momentum of resistance continues to grow as Tibul and the rebels infiltrate the palace via an underground passage, sparking a second uprising that finally topples the Three Fat Men’s grip on the city. In the ensuing chaos, Tutti is wounded but discovers something surprising: he has a real heart, not the hollow mechanism everyone had believed him to possess.
With the rebellion secured, Suok and Arneri are freed, and the city marks its newfound freedom with a grand concert in the central square, a celebration orchestrated by the performers themselves. The caravan votes to keep moving, their journey carrying stories of courage and transformation to new horizons. In a hopeful finale, Tutti chooses to join the traveling troupe, stepping out onto the road toward a life beyond the palace, where art, resilience, and companionship forge a path for a brighter future.
