Three and Out

Paul Callow accidentally runs over a man who has been pulled onto the tracks by his dog. The accident unfolds in a rush as the train screeches to a stop and witnesses react with shock. The event seeds Paul's guilt and secrecy that drive the rest of the story.

A week after the first accident, Paul deliberately causes another death when a passenger collapses from a heart attack and slides onto the tracks. The driver can't avert it and the man dies. Paul glimpses the possible leverage of his actions and the consequences that could follow.

Paul's colleagues explain a little-known rule at London Underground: three 'underground deaths' within a month means job loss and a lump-sum payout. They joke that the payoff could be ten years' salary in one go. The rule becomes the dark engine behind Paul's plan.

Paul decides he cannot kill himself, so he seeks someone willing to die under his train for money. He calculates he must secure a volunteer by the following Monday. He steels himself to act, convinced the weekend will offer a last, meaningful chance.

At Holborn Viaduct, Paul pulls Tommy Cassidy back from the edge after a suicide attempt. Tommy is furious at first, accusing do-gooders of meddling. Hearing a police siren, Tommy agrees to get in Paul's car.

In a bar, Paul explains his proposal and offers money for Tommy to jump in front of the train. Tommy questions what money means when life is on the line. He agrees, hoping for one last weekend to live meaningfully.

Tommy hires a car and they travel to Liverpool, seeking distance from their plan and a chance to live. Paul accompanies to protect his investment. The weekend trip becomes the first step in Tommy's attempt to reconcile his life.

Tommy discovers his wife Rosemary and daughter Frances have moved to the Lake District. He faces initial resistance from Rosemary, who has started a new life. The visit sets the stage for emotional confrontations and renewed bonds.

Paul meets Frances in the Lake District pub, and the two get drunk and sleep together. The act complicates the plan and feeds Tommy's growing unease. The weekend becomes a test of loyalties and desires.

Tommy tries to talk to his daughter and sees her in bed with Paul, then chases them across the hills. He suffers a mild cardiac attack and is taken to hospital. Paul and Tommy begin the journey back to London with the plan still in play.

Tommy and Paul return to London, where the realities of the plan press in. Paul grows conflicted as the weekend's emotions clash with the vow he made. The distance between their goals widens as the Monday deadline approaches.

On Monday morning Paul's colleagues tell him there is no payout and that the 'three and out' rule was a joke. The revelation collapses the rationalization behind the plan and leaves Paul reeling. He steels himself for the inevitable confrontation ahead.

Paul signals an animal on the tracks to cover his motive, then accelerates toward Tommy. Tommy recites William Butler Yeats' The Lake Isle of Innisfree as the train kills him. The grim act seals the brutal end of the deal.

Paul writes a new novel titled Three and Out and hides a dedication behind the cheque: 'In Memory of Tommy Cassidy'. Frances receives the copy and the £10,000, keeping Tommy's memory alive. Frankie travels to London to meet Paul, and together they fulfill Tommy's last wish by going deep-sea diving with Great White Sharks.
