Set in a late‑19th‑century rural corner of southern England, Grace, daughter of timber merchant Melbury, returns home after finishing school. Pressured by her father to find a better match than her childhood sweetheart, the woodsman Giles, she marries doctor Fitzpiers. She soon discovers he cannot fulfill her dreams and her heart still belongs to Giles.
