The Llano Kid enters a local town poker game and attracts the attention of the devout blacksmith John Brown, who fancies himself a sheriff. He spots a young gambler cheating, confronts him, and is forced to kill in self-defense when the man draws on him. The killing brands him as a wanted man and triggers a lawman’s pursuit.

The Kid is hunted by an increasingly zealous Brown who closes in on him, nearly capturing him. Brown proclaims that 'God will deliver you into my hands,' underscoring his moral certainty. In a tense moment, the Kid manages to draw first and escapes, starting a high-stakes chase.

Aboard a train, the Kid meets Thacker, an unscrupulous lawyer who hatches a plan to exploit him. Thacker convinces him to pose as Señora Ibarra's long-lost son, Enrique, so they can return and swindle the widow of her gold. The Kid accepts the offer, hoping the deception will end his days as a hunted man.

Thacker and the Kid set sail on a schooner toward South America, leaving the law behind for a chance at a new life. They arrive in the seaport town of Buenas Tierras and prepare to begin the deception. The voyage marks the start of Enrique's assumed identity.

Upon arrival at Señora Ibarra's hacienda, the Kid uses basic Spanish, new sideburns, and Enrique's tattooed hand to pass as the missing son. Thacker and the Kid present themselves as Enrique to the widow and her household, moving toward the supposed reunion. The deceit appears to be working as they gain entry to the family circle.

The Kid meets Consuelo, the widow's charming ward, and falls in love. His feelings complicate the scheme, softening his ruthlessness and deepening his internal conflict. Señora Ibarra's affection for him further unsettles the plan he has agreed to play.

The Kid learns that Señora Ibarra's son was the man he shot in self-defense years earlier, a revelation that shatters the con. He decides to withdraw from the scheme, choosing love and integrity over deceit. Thacker reacts with anger and plots a more explosive grab for the widow's gold.

Feeling betrayed, Thacker forms a gang to steal the widow's gold outright. The Kid's loyalties are tested as he tries to protect Consuelo and the family from the looming threat. The situation escalates toward a violent clash that could tear the new-found peace apart.

Sheriff Brown arrives in Buenas Tierras, having tracked the Llano Kid to this distant town. He waits until nightfall to arrest him, setting the stage for a climactic confrontation. A confrontation unfolds, bringing the pursuit to a head.

In the ensuing gunfight, the Kid is wounded and Thacker is killed. The widow and Consuelo seek safety as chaos erupts around them. The Kid's courage and inner resolve come into sharp relief as the tragedy unfolds.

Witnessing the Kid's true character under fire, Brown experiences a moral turning point. He decides to keep the Kid's identity secret to spare Enrique and allow him to live with his new family. The arrest shifts from punishment to quiet protection.

With his cover maintained, Enrique can continue his life with Consuelo and Señora Ibarra. The widow accepts him as her son, and the lovers secure a future away from pursuit. The story ends on a note of mercy and redemption rather than tragedy.
