The Robbers

Johann, a convicted felon and marathon runner, is paroled from prison after serving time for attempted armed robbery. He immediately resumes criminal activities by committing bank robberies with a disguise and a shotgun. His release marks the beginning of his continued criminal spree.

After his release, Johann moves into the apartment of Erika, a young social worker and his friend. They quickly develop a romantic relationship, adding a personal dimension to Johann's life post-incarceration. This relationship becomes central to his story.

Johann begins to participate in marathons and manages to win several with record-breaking times. These achievements garner him recognition and congratulations from his parole officer, showcasing his physical prowess and determination.

Erika starts to suspect Johann's involvement in ongoing criminal activities after discovering loot under his bed. She confronts him, demanding he leave, but also hints that change is possible, creating tension in their relationship.

Weeks after the suspicions, Johann fails to contact his parole officer. The officer, concerned about Johann's lack of communication and possible relapse, visits him after a marathon to check on him. Johann's combative response results in the officer's death.

Johann is finally apprehended by police in his hotel room, where he had been hiding his money. After being asked to sign a confession, he unexpectedly breaks out of jail through a window, initiating a cross-country manhunt.

On the run, Johann takes refuge in an old man's house. During the confrontation, the old man reveals a concealed pocket knife and stabs Johann deeply, but Johann manages to steal the old man’s car and continue fleeing.

While fleeing in the stolen car, Johann notices a helicopter following him. He then switches cars with motorists at a rest stop, attempting to evade the police, showcasing his desperation and quick thinking.

Johann begins to lose consciousness due to his serious wound, realizing the extent of his injuries. He pulls over and remains on the phone with Erika, acknowledging his deteriorating condition.

As Johann's breaths slow and eventually stop, he dies on the roadside after his wound proves fatal. His final moments involve a call to Erika, emphasizing the personal toll of his actions and downfall.
