The Quest

In the mid-1990s present-day frame, an old man sits in an empty bar waiting for service. A group of thugs bursts in and attempts to rob the till, but the old man defeats them with calm, practiced moves, sending them fleeing one by one. The brief violence restores order and hints at a hidden past behind the man’s aura.

After the confrontation, the bartender asks how he learned to fight. The old man cryptically says it was long ago, and the screen flashes to his youth. This framing sets up the epic flashback that follows.

In 1925 New York City, Christopher Dubois is a mid-twenties pickpocket who also looks after several orphans by running cons and stealing. He survives by lending a hand to the kids while dodging tougher criminals. His early life is a blend of crime and care that shapes his moral center.

After Dubois steals a large sum from gangsters, the criminals catch up with him and the children. Dubois subdues the gangsters in a brutal confrontation, but the clash draws police attention and complicates his escape. The incident pushes him toward a darker, more dangerous path.

To escape the net, Dubois stows away on a boat, promising to return to the children. The plan backfires when the voyage is discovered and crewed by gun smugglers and pirates who enslave him in hard labor. The journey marks a brutal transition from petty crime to survival under threatening hands.

A mercenary Englishman, Lord Edgar Dobbs, boards the pirate ship during an attack and saves Dubois. The two men form a wary alliance: Dobbs promises help returning home, but he deceives him and sells him into slavery on a Siam island. The setup places Dubois on a brutal path toward mastery of fighting.

On the Siam island, Dubois is sold into slavery and forced into hard labor. He is trained in Muay Thai by his captors, forging a disciplined fighting style and physical resilience. The brutal regimen becomes the foundation for his future prowess.

Six months later, Dobbs and his partner Harry Smythe spot a fighting Dubois in a Muay Thai bout and recognize his talent. They decide to intervene, acquiring his freedom to use him as a national representative. The moment marks the shift toward international competition.

Dobbs buys his freedom so Dubois can represent the United States in a Kumite-like tournament called the Ghang-gheng, staged in the Lost City of Tibet. The arrangement reframes the path as a quest rather than a simple escape. Dubois embarks on a journey that will test his limits.

Fighters from many nations—Germany, the Soviet Union, Scotland, Spain, Turkey, Brazil, Korea, Siam, Greece, France, China, Japan, Okinawa, Africa, and Mongolia—converge for elimination bouts. The prize is a solid gold statue, the Golden Dragon. The tournament blends sport with myth and spectacle.

Dubois defeats Khan, the Mongolian representative, to win the tournament and is awarded a medal, hailed as the greatest fighter. He refuses the Golden Dragon, signaling a departure from greed. The victory anchors his reputation and moral choices.

Instead of keeping the prize, he trades the Golden Dragon for the lives of Dobbs and Harry, who were sentenced to death for earlier attempting to steal the Dragon. The selfless act demonstrates Dubois's growth and loyalty. The Dragon is sacrificed to save his friends.

Back in New York, Dubois explains that he returned to help the children leave the streets and find safety. The revelation ties his past life to his present one. Maxie Devine is credited with training many fighters along the way.

Dobbs and Harry use their new freedom to establish a trading post deep in the Amazon, turning their adventure into a new frontier. The voyage marks the lasting partnership forged during the quest. Their work expands beyond fighting into exploration and commerce.
