Two Russian cavalry captains stop at a German post station, prompting one to recount a decade‑old tale. Ten years earlier his comrade had rested there, fallen for the postmaster’s daughter, and promised marriage before whisking her to St. Petersburg. Upon arrival she discovers the captain never intended to wed her.
