In a Soviet industrial town known only for a radio telescope, people start behaving robotically, taking geometry‑inspired aliases and forming a rigid hierarchy. An alien device, the Mediator, spreads by implanting extraterrestrial minds into humans, but cannot control children, lunatics, geniuses or rebels. A struggle ensues over the town’s and humanity’s fate.
