Anma (The Masseurs) is a film by Butoh pioneer Tatsumi Hijikata that blends documentation with choreography, using the camera as part of the performance. Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno perform Hijikata’s soldier piece and Ohno’s ‘mad woman’ who moves from outcast to community through dance. Filming and captions are record of this work, key to understanding Hijikata’s Butoh.
