The Juggler

After World War II, Hans Müller is among a shipload of Jewish refugees who disembark in Haifa in 1949 and are placed in a refugee camp. He carries survivor guilt and is plagued by memories of his family. At one point he mistakes a woman and some children for his murdered relatives.

Seizing the first opportunity, Hans slips out of the camp and heads into the city. He becomes anxious when he spots a policeman and bolts in a panic. The escape marks the start of his fugitive life.

The policeman closes in and questions Hans, who becomes increasingly agitated. In a panic, Hans attacks and leaves the officer unconscious in the street. He then flees once more.

Hans escapes into the countryside and sleeps rough under the open sky. He is later discovered by a teenage Sabra, Yehoshua 'Josh' Bresler, who will change the course of his life. This encounter begins to pivot Hans away from aimless flight toward human connection.

Josh, a teenage Sabra, finds him and offers to help. Hans pretends to be an eccentric American visiting Israel, while Josh agrees to accompany him as a guide. This unlikely alliance sets the stage for their journey.

On their journey, Hans reveals he was a professional juggler, which surprises Josh. The teen persuades him to pass on his skills and to travel together. This marks the start of a mentor-guide dynamic that shapes their road ahead.

Meanwhile, police detective Karni sets out to track Hans down and bring him to justice. He follows the growing trail of clues as Hans moves with Josh along their route. The pursuit adds tension to their journey.

During their travels, Josh is injured when they wander into a minefield near a kibbutz. He breaks his leg and is taken to the medical centre for care. The accident forces Hans to confront responsibility and adapt to new constraints.

While Josh recovers, Hans becomes acquainted with Ya'el, a local resident, and they are drawn to each other. He is initially reluctant to stay at the kibbutz, fearing his past will catch up with him. The connection hints at a possible new life if he accepts help.

Hans explains that he ignored warnings to flee Nazi Germany and counted on his fame to protect his family. He recognizes the fatal mistake of relying on his image to shield loved ones. This confession marks a turning point in his self-awareness.

Over time, Hans begins to settle into life at the kibbutz with Ya'el's influence. He earns the trust of residents and learns to accept help. The past gradually loosens its grip as he builds new connections.

Karni finally tracks Hans down and tries to take him into custody. He pursues him to a confrontation that tests Hans's resolve. The pursuit leads toward a tense standoff.

Hans panics again and barricades himself in Ya'el's room with her rifle. Ya'el and Karni work to calm him and persuade him to surrender. He admits he needs help and gives himself up.
