Set in 18th‑century Lisbon, it follows the life of Antônio José da Silva, a Brazilian‑born Jewish poet, playwright and lawyer. After enduring the Inquisition’s torture, he pretends to convert to Catholicism to escape death, but his fierce criticism of Portugal’s elite soon provokes renewed persecution, turning him into a convenient scapegoat for the authorities.
