Muichkine, a young Russian prince, returns to St. Petersburg from a mental institution intent on spreading decency and kindness in a harsh, cruel world. He becomes betrothed to an innocent young woman while trying to rescue a more troubled woman from her own plight; however, jealousy and his own naiveté combine to unleash unimaginable tragedy.
