The Conspirators

In the summer of 1825 Rome, the ancient city swarms with whispers of change while the weight of authority presses down from marble thrones. Bishop Rivarola and Colonel Nardoni marshal the Pontifical Guard in a fierce effort to suppress a rising liberal spirit, turning the streets into a chessboard of suspicion and surveillance. At the heart of this turmoil is Cornacchia, a modest shoemaker whose hands craft both footwear and the covert verses of a daring satirist.
