The Betrayal

Jerry and George run into Nina, Jerry's old girlfriend with whom he never slept. George decides to have Jerry set him up on a date with Nina, hoping to connect the two. He vows to wear Timberland boots whenever he sees her to keep eye-to-eye contact. This encounter seeds the backward-narrative that drives the episode.

An awkward pause between Jerry and Nina follows their initial meeting, and they end up having sex. When Elaine discovers the encounter, Jerry makes her promise not to tell George. The secrecy becomes a tension point as the story moves backward.

Elaine receives an invitation to Sue Ellen Mischke's wedding to Pinter Ranawat in India, which she suspects is really an 'uninvitation' due to its late arrival. She meets Pinter's parents, Usha and Zubin Ranawat, who advise her not to go; they themselves are not attending. Their warnings foreshadow the chaotic social dynamics of the trip.

To spite Sue Ellen, Elaine buys tickets to India for herself, Jerry, George, and Nina. The plan sets the stage for the group to travel together, regardless of the awkward history among them.

Noticing Elaine's evasive behavior, George gets her drunk on schnapps. While under the influence, Elaine reveals Jerry and Nina's encounter to George. This revelation prompts George to taunt Jerry during the flight to India.

In India, Elaine recognizes Pinter as an ex-lover who went by 'Peter' at the time. Sue Ellen is thrilled Elaine came and asks her to be maid of honor. This sequence intensifies the wedding-related drama in the backward narrative.

Elaine reconciles with Sue Ellen and resolves not to let her find out about her affair with Pinter. She chooses discretion to preserve their friendship as the story unfolds backward.

Jerry gets Elaine drunk on schnapps again to discover why George is acting bitter toward him. The maneuver adds more tension to the group's dynamics amid the India trip.

George and Jerry bicker over Nina during the wedding ceremony. Elaine mentions her affair with Pinter, and George repeats it loudly for everyone to hear. Sue Ellen cancels the wedding and ends her friendship with Elaine.

George demands Nina choose between him and Jerry; she declares she isn’t interested in either man and reveals she came to India for a free trip. The trip's purpose fractures the relationships further in the backward narrative.

Kramer attends Franklin Delano Roosevelt's birthday, and FDR gives him the 'evil eye' just before the candles are blown. FDR reveals that his wish was for Kramer to drop dead because Kramer hit him with a snowball two years earlier.

Kramer negotiates for Newman to use his birthday wish to protect him from dropping dead, but Newman instead wishes for a date with a supermodel. Newman's girlfriend suggests Kramer counter the wish. Kramer and FDR try to out-wish each other with a shooting star, coin in a fountain, eyelashes, and a wishbone, until Kramer convinces FDR to retract the wish in exchange for letting FDR hit him with a snowball.
