Childless writer Andrei and artist Olga adopt eight-year-old Ksyusha, but their newfound happiness is threatened. The director of the orphanage, Andrei’s former girlfriend, is determined to win him back, even if it means sabotaging his marriage. As Andrei writes a science fiction novel exploring a dark, frozen version of Petersburg, Ksyusha mysteriously enters the story's unsettling world. There, Andrei encounters a mysterious figure named Paramon, and they embark on perilous adventures together, blurring the lines between reality and fiction.
