Fourteen‑year‑old Susan Shawson discovers that the elevator in her Philadelphia apartment building, modified by a retired physicist tenant, can travel through time. It whisks her from 1998 back to 1881, where she befriends her contemporary Victoria Walker, who is dealing with family troubles. Together with Susan’s younger brother Robert, they experiment with the time‑travel device, moving between eras and ultimately altering events in both the past and the future.
