Fourteen‑year‑old Susan Shawson discovers that the elevator in her Philadelphia apartment building, modified by a retired physicist tenant, can travel through time. It whisks her from 1998 back to 1881, where she befriends her contemporary Victoria Walker, who is dealing with family troubles.
