In a provincial Russian town at the turn of the twentieth century, sisters Olga, Irina and Masha and their brother Andrei cling to memories of vibrant Moscow. Local soldiers provide brief companionship, but cannot replace the city’s allure. Andrei marries practical Natasha, who dominates the household. Masha, though married, has an affair with the melancholy officer Vershinin. Even hopeful Irina’s optimism fades, ending in tragedy.
