The Strange One

Cadet Staff Sergeant Jocko De Paris is a senior at the fictional Southern Military College, a prestigious military school where tradition and authority hold significant sway. In this setting, upperclassmen often wield their power to dominate and manipulate the newer cadets, creating an environment where fear and respect are intertwined. Jocko De Paris, played by Ben Gazzara, is a prime example of this, as he exploits his rank, his father’s influence with the institution, and the school’s unwritten customs to do as he pleases. To others at the college, he is either feared or viewed as a typical, or even exemplary, cadet — a figure whose intimidating presence seems unquestioned.

The story takes a darker turn when De Paris resorts to deception and bullying. One night, he concocts a plan to frame George Avery (/actor/george-peppard), the son of a staff member, making it seem as if Avery got drunk and unconscious on the college’s quadrangle. Through lies and manipulation, De Paris ensures that Avery is expelled from the school, dominating the investigation by coercing witnesses and forcing others to lie to cover his tracks. This act of cruelty highlights the extent of De Paris’s abuse of power and his willingness to manipulate anyone who stands in his way.

However, as the narrative unfolds, a group of students begins to recognize the toxic nature of De Paris’s actions and decides to stand against him. Two freshmen, along with the roommates of De Paris and the regimental commander, Laurie Corger (/actor/peter-mark-richman), organize to put an end to his unchecked influence. Their efforts lead to a tense confrontation, where De Paris is eventually cornered in a restaurant in a nearby town. Despite his initial bravado and confidence — even when faced with serious accusations — De Paris is forced to admit his wrongdoing and signs a confession that admits to engineering Avery’s expulsion and concealing the truth from authorities.

The climax of the story revolves around the camaraderie and collective justice of the cadets. Laurie Corger, acting as the regimental commander, orders De Paris to sign the confession, knowing that his actions have caused irreparable harm. Once De Paris is subdued, the students take him away from the restaurant, heading towards a railroad track. Instead of executing a harsh punishment, the cadets decide to give De Paris a symbolic, yet intense, lesson. They place him on the train, which begins to move again after stopping, and though he initially expects to be thrown in front of an oncoming train, they instead take him onboard, sending him away as a forced reminder of the consequences of his actions.

As the train departs, an increasingly frantic and blindfolded De Paris pulls off his cover, and with raw anger, rages at his captors, shouting, “I’ll be back! I’ll get you guys! You can’t do this to Jocko De Paris!” His words reveal his refusal to accept defeat and his determination to return and reclaim his power. The story explores themes of authority, manipulation, accountability, and collective justice within a strict military environment, emphasizing how a group of students stand together to challenge corruption and tyranny.
