After a self‑absorbed young actor humiliates an elderly Noh performer, the veteran takes his own life. The actor’s cruelty drives his own father to disown him, forcing the once‑promising star onto the streets. Determined to regain his father’s respect and win the affection of the deceased performer’s daughter, he strives toward an honorable path. Naruse’s finely layered mise‑en‑scene gives the family melodrama a visual elegance reminiscent of Josef von Sternberg.
