In occupied France in 1941, German officer Werner Von Ebrennac is lodged in the house of an uncle and his niece. The two refuse to speak to him, yet each night he sits by the fire, speaking of his country, his love of music, and his idealistic hopes for French‑German relations. When a trip to Paris reveals the harsh reality of the occupation, his perspective changes.
