Set in an archetypal Czech village, the allegory follows mysterious events – most notably the stationmaster’s disappearance. Though each incident has a rational cause, collective paranoia erupts, unleashing people’s darkest instincts. Systematic interrogations, the denial of basic rights, and the frantic hunt for scapegoats finally culminate in murder.
