Set in 9th-century Ireland amidst the Viking expansion, the narrative centers around Brendan, a spirited and inquisitive boy residing in the close-knit Abbey of Kells. Under the supervision of his stern uncle, Abbot Cellach, Brendan is raised in a place dominated by Cellach’s obsession with fortifying the Abbey with an immense wall to fend off Viking incursions.
As Brendan carries out his apprenticeship in the scriptorium, he becomes enthralled by stories of Brother Aidan, the visionary behind the Book of Iona. This ignites his interest in the enigmatic illuminator and the unfinished Book of Kells, described as a creation that transforms darkness into light. Brother Aidan, accompanied by his unique white cat, Pangur Bán, arrives at Kells after barely escaping from a Viking pillage in Iona. The film deftly reveals this backstory through the opening titles.
Brendan’s curiosity leads him to eavesdrop on a conversation between Aidan and Cellach. He subsequently stumbles into the scriptorium where he discovers the almost-complete illuminated manuscript guarded by Pangur Bán. Excited to mentor Brendan, Aidan dispatches him to gather gall nuts, crucial for crafting more ink, leading him through a concealed passage to the summer woods.
In a shocking turn, Brendan faces danger from a ravenous pack of wolves, yet is miraculously rescued by Aisling, a mystical Aos Sí or faerie who can shift forms. After Brendan proves his sincere intentions to aid in the book’s creation, an unwavering friendship blossoms between them. However, they must confront a lingering obstacle in the form of Crom Cruach, an ancient deity associated with chaos and destruction, which terrifies Aisling due to its dark past of orphaning her.
Upon returning to the Abbey, Brendan faces repercussions from Cellach who prohibits him from leaving the Abbey’s safety again. Nevertheless, under Aidan’s guidance, Brendan learns that their cherished project faces severe threat due to the loss of the Eye of Colm Cille, a vital magnifying lens lost during Aidan’s escape from Iona. Recognizing that it belonged to Crom, Brendan endeavors to retrieve another ‘Eye’ but is confined by Cellach for disobeying his orders.
With the aid of Pangur Bán and Aisling, Brendan escapes into the heart of the forest where Aisling fervently implores him to avoid confronting Crom. Ignoring her warnings, Brendan is determined to complete the book, compelling Aisling to assist him in infiltrating Crom’s lair, which transcends into a recklessly dangerous venture. Engaging in an intense confrontation, Brendan ultimately bests Crom, blinding the beast and causing it to annihilate itself.
Returning to Kells, Brendan aids Aidan with the new Eye of Colm Cille, a venture observed eagerly by the monks. However, dread descends upon the Abbey as a wounded messenger alerts Cellach about the advancing Vikings. The once-secure Abbey turns into a refuge for those fleeing Viking violence.
In a fit of rage, Cellach imprisons Brendan and Aidan in the scriptorium, tearing out a precious page that Brendan had crafted. The invaders breach the Abbey’s wooden gate, leading to chaos. During the attack, Cellach is severely wounded, and the overwhelming surge of terrified villagers causes the staircase to collapse, resulting in the buildings catching fire. Locked in the flaming scriptorium, Brendan and Aidan cleverly use green smoke from gallberry ink to escape, racing into the forest with Pangur Bán and their illuminated manuscript as chaos reigns.
Amid their flight, the Vikings discover them, seizing the manuscript only to destroy its ornate cover, discarding the invaluable pages as if they were inconsequential. However, Aisling’s wolves take swift action against the raiders, enabling Brendan to recover the last page of the book, leading to an almost spiritual moment with a white wolf that embodies Aisling.
Brendan and Aidan traverse Ireland over subsequent years, finally completing the remarkable book. Aidan entrusts the tome to Brendan before passing away, leaving the now-adult Brendan to return to Kells alongside Pangur Bán, guided by the spirit of Aisling in the form of a white wolf.
The once-prosperous Abbey lies in ruins after the Viking assault, with only a few survivors, including a gravely injured Cellach, taking refuge in the central tower. In a poignant reunion, Brendan confronts his remorseful uncle, showcasing to him the culmination of their struggles—the completed Book of Kells.
The film culminates with a beautiful animated sequence of the intricate Chi-Rho page, illustrating the profound details that symbolize the triumph of light over darkness.
