An aging frontier sheriff, proud and armed, keeps law in a cattle town while courting his fiancée, Virginia Mayo. A crooked casino operator from his past arrives, and a brawl leaves him partially blinded. A cattle‑drive newcomer, Jeffrey Hunter, learns the sheriff killed his father; their hostility shifts to uneasy respect, leading to a showdown.
