Jake Turner, a renowned best-selling author, is abruptly notified by his mother Lois’s lawyer about her passing, which comes with the surprising news that he has inherited her estate, including her home in Connecticut. This home holds decades of memories, and for Jake, it’s a return to a place he hasn’t set foot in since he was just 17—two decades prior. His mission: to sort through his mother’s belongings, which have become an overwhelming hoard, while also dealing with the complexities of his estranged relationship with his late mother.
Upon his arrival, Jake is reintroduced to the neighbor, Ellie, who kindly brings him lunch the following day. Soon, he learns that his father, Scott, who had walked out on him and Lois shortly after the tragic death of his older brother in an accident, made a silent appearance at Lois’s funeral, expressing a desire to reconnect. In a twist of fate, Ellie seeks Jake’s help with her profile on a dating app, to which he quickly agrees, showcasing his writing knack.
Just when Jake stumbles upon an old diary, he meets Rachel Campbell, a woman who has been eyeing the house since his arrival. Rachel is searching for details about her birth mother, Noel, who was once Jake’s nanny—a curious coincidence that leads to an unexpected bond. As they chat, Jake suggests Rachel consult with Ellie, but Ellie is out, leading Jake to ask Rachel out for dinner. She insists on paying her share, unaware of Jake’s successful stature in the literary world.
During dinner, Rachel opens up about her quest for stability and certainty, mentioning her fiancé Alan, a tax attorney. Her search for her birth mother stems from a deep-seated void created by her adoption, and she hopes to fill that gap once she uncovers the truth about her origins. Back at the house, a poignant moment occurs when Jake plays a tune on the piano, and Rachel harmonizes the lyrics, forming a connection through music as they work together to clear out her mother’s room.
In the morning, the sound of Ellie’s return pulls them from a reflective slumber as they consider their next steps. Not recalling Rachel’s mother well, Ellie suggests they seek out Scott, who has retreated to a life off the grid in Vermont. Initially hesitant, Rachel offers her help in articulating Jake’s frustrations while navigating their relationship on this journey. She prefers analog navigation, sharing a glimpse into her life as she reveals her unmentioned aspirations of a possible UN job and her secret search for her birth mother.
As they travel together, a storm forces them to temporarily stay at an inn. Here, Rachel’s curiosity leads her to purchase Jake’s first book, devouring it through the night. The following day, as they near a moment of intimacy, Rachel suddenly pulls back, reminding him of her engagement. Their arrival at Scott’s place unveils a reconciliation between father and son, creating an atmosphere where Scott can share precious memories of Rachel’s mother, including signed wedding invitations and insight into her likely whereabouts.
Despite their initial misunderstandings, Rachel and Jake share a night together, but the emotional weight leads Rachel to leave Jake a heartfelt goodbye note, stating she can move on, now satisfied that she had been loved. In a courageous attempt to chase after Rachel, Jake confesses his love for her at her parents’ place, but she reveals that she doesn’t feel the same way. Compelled to find closure for both of them, he tracks down Noel Hayden, who indicates she is open to meeting Rachel. As Jake returns to his late mother’s home, he discovers unread letters from his father, stirring a mix of emotions. Just as he leaves, he unexpectedly encounters Rachel outside, her smile hinting at the possibilities that lie ahead.
