Elna Curry, a former concert pianist plagued by neurasthenia, grows irrationally jealous of neighbour Trudie Morrow, wrongly convinced she is involved with Elna’s husband John. Elna vows revenge. John tells Trudie about Elna’s condition, and Trudie, kind‑hearted, offers to move. When John returns home to find Elna dead, he destroys her suicide note to protect Trudie, leading to his arrest and a murder trial.
