The Meteor Man (1993) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of The Meteor Man (1993), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Jefferson Reed, Robert Townsend, is a schoolteacher in Washington, DC. His neighborhood is terrorized by a gang called the Golden Lords, led by Simon Caine and allied with drug lord Anthony Byers, Frank Gorshin. One night, Jeff steps in to rescue a woman from the gang, but he must flee for his life, ducking into a garbage dumpster as the gang closes in. When he crawls out, a glowing green meteorite strikes him, crushing his spine and leaving his body badly burned. A fragment of the meteor is later picked up by a vagrant named Marvin, Bill Cosby. Jeff wakes up days later in the hospital, and as the bandages come off, he discovers he has been miraculously healed.

The meteorite has granted him a astonishing array of superpowers: he can fly, gain x-ray vision, laser vision, possess superhuman strength, speed, and hearing, become nearly invulnerable, and even heal others. He also acquires the quirky ability to absorb a book’s content by touch, exhale with super breath, communicate telepathically with dogs (his own dog Ellington), and move objects with his mind (telekinesis). These gifts arrive with a newfound sense of purpose, and he shares the news with his family. His father, Robert Guillaume as Ted Reed, and the rest of his loved ones encourage him to use this power for good.

To channel his gifts, Jeff designs a heroic costume and emerges as the Meteor Man, patrolling a city that has begun to trust him. With his powers on his side, he helps restore a measure of order: he shuts down 15 crack houses, stops 11 robberies, and helps broker a fragile peace between the police and rival street factions, the Crips and the Bloods. The community starts to believe in his mission and in the possibility of nonviolent change through courage and cooperation.

Yet the Golden Lords learn Meteor Man’s secret identity, and Jeff’s powers start to wane. Violence spikes again, and a growing chorus of residents debates how best to respond. Rather than retreat, Jeff leans into education and empowerment, teaching his neighbors to stand up for what they believe in. In a high-stakes clash, Jeff, now without full power, faces Simon Caine in a brutal showdown. Earnest Moses, his neighbor, James Earl Jones—a voice of steady wisdom—throws a vinyl record to disrupt Simon’s weapon and buy Jeff a moment to regroup. Marvin, ever the ally, uses the meteor fragment to strip the Golden Lords of their guns, and the community–led by Marvin’s resourceful dogs–rallies to push back against the gang.

During the frenzy, the meteor fragment plots another twist: it drops from the sky, and both Jeff and Simon grab the rock from opposite sides, briefly restoring their powers so they can finish the fight. A dramatic street battle erupts, with Jeff returning to his Meteor Man persona to confront Simon once and for all. In a pivotal moment, Meteor Man drains Simon’s powers, and the Golden Lords are dispersed. The locals gather around Ellington, who lies on the street, whimpering in pain as Jeff’s powers fade once more. Marvin uses the last of his own meteor energy to heal Ellington, underscoring the film’s message about community care and selflessness.

The final confrontation extends beyond Meteor Man’s triumph over a single gang. Anthony Byers and his crew reappear, but they are met by a united front of residents—armed with resolve and supported by the Crips and Bloods—who stand ready to protect their community. The authorities close in, and Byers and his gang are arrested after attempting a hasty getaway to the Bahamas. In the end, Meteor Man’s legacy remains not just the feats of a single hero, but the rekindled spirit of a neighborhood that learned to believe in its own power to change.
