Timeline
During Sigurd Helmer’s ordination as bishop, the fanatic Tornkvist watches from the back, then rushes to the police with proof that Helmer secured the office through anonymous letters that smeared Tornkvist in the struggle for the bishop’s crozier. At the banquet‑in the bishop’s residence‑Tornkvist drops the accusation like a bomb and announces his engagement to Helmer’s daughter, plunging the gathering into chaos. Helmer’s wife remains convinced of his innocence, but he is soon put on trial, accused by Tornkvist. The drama is based on Axel Kielland’s 1955 play.
