Xiao Hua, the sister of Zhao Yongsheng, is abandoned by her poor family and taken in by woodworker He Xiangdong, who renames her He Cuigu. To evade enemy capture, Dong Hongguo, from a revolutionary family, assumes the name Xiao Hua and is also adopted. After Zhao’s parents are killed, he joins the Liberation Army. In 1947 he returns to Tongbai, where his sister, now a celebrated guerrilla hero, carries him on a stretcher without recognizing him. After the war, Zhao, Xiao Hua, Cuigu, Dong Xiangkun and Doctor Zhou are joyfully reunited with their long‑lost relatives.
