Seymour misfires on a floral arrangement for dentist Dr. Farb, alarming Mushnick. He is fired on the spot, given one week to prove he can turn the shop around. The setback pushes Seymour to seek a new, risky solution.

Seymour reveals a plant he has grown from seeds obtained from a Japanese gardener. He names it Audrey Jr., and Audrey reacts with delight at the plant's unusual charm. The strange plant instantly hints at untapped potential.

Seymour argues that Audrey Jr.'s uniqueness could draw crowds, persuading Mushnick to give him one final week to revive the plant. The pressure mounts as time runs short. The shop's future hinges on Audrey Jr.'s performance.

The disappearances of Farb and the earlier victim attract the attention of Sergeant Joe Fink and Officer Frank Stoolie. They attend a sunset celebration at the shop where Audrey Jr.'s buds are due to open, and the case begins to feel personal.

Audrey Jr. grows several feet tall and begins to bud. A representative of the Society of Silent Flower Observers of Southern California announces that Seymour will receive a trophy and that the plant will return to the shop when the buds open. The odd spectacle earns the town's attention and anticipation.

During a sunset celebration at the shop, four buds open, and inside each flower is the face of one of Audrey Jr.'s victims. Fink and Stoolie realize that Seymour is the murderer. The crowd's excitement turns to shock as the truth sinks in.

While tending the shop, Mushnick encounters Klo Haddock, a robber who had posed as a customer earlier. He tricks Haddock into believing the money is hidden near Audrey Jr., and the plant devours Haddock. The shop's dark secret begins to threaten more lives.

Seymour, increasingly manipulated by Audrey Jr., attempts to break free of the plant's control. The plant hypnotizes him and sends him out to gather more food. He returns to the shop and climbs into Audrey Jr.'s maw with a knife, the plant withering as a final bud reveals Seymour's face and his scream, 'I didn't mean it!'
