Set in 1943 near Wellington, U.S. Marines are stationed while a union boss, exempt from service and thriving on black‑market profits, murders one of them. The victim’s fiancée Rose, a union‑controlled girl who trades sexual favours for intel, becomes the focus of a Marine’s investigation. With the help of a public‑health nurse tracking venereal disease, the case unravels a wider conspiracy linking the Hotel Workers Union, the government and the U.S. military.
