In 1951, the small oil town of Anarene, Texas, serves as the backdrop for the story of Sonny Crawford and Duane Jackson. These high school seniors navigate the complexities of youth while facing love, friendship, and the pressures of their environment.

Duane becomes romantically involved with Jacy Farrow, a beautiful and wealthy girl, capturing the envy of his peers. Meanwhile, Sonny grapples with his own emotions, hiding a secret love for Jacy that complicates his friendship with Duane.

During a festive Christmas dance, the atmosphere is charged with excitement as Jacy gets invited to a wild skinny-dipping party at Bobby Sheen's luxurious home. Sonny's romantic entanglements deepens when he shares a kiss with Ruth Popper, the troubled wife of his coach.

In an attempt to help their friend Billy, who has mental disabilities, Sonny and Duane take him to a prostitute, showcasing their misguided intentions. Local businessman Sam 'The Lion' is outraged by their actions and initially bans them from his businesses.

Despite his anger at Sonny and Duane, Sam 'The Lion' reassesses his view when he witnesses Sonny's compassion for Billy. This prompts him to allow Sonny back into his café, creating a crucial turning point in their relationship.

As New Year's approaches, Duane and Sonny embark on a road trip to Mexico. They receive a bittersweet farewell from Sam, who offers them money, demonstrating the bond that has formed between them.

Upon their return from Mexico, the boys are devastated to learn about Sam's sudden death from a stroke. This loss significantly alters the dynamics of their lives, as he leaves the pool hall to Sonny in his will.

Jacy invites Duane to a motel room, seeking intimacy fueled by her confusion over Bobby's advances. After an awkward and humiliating encounter, she decides to end her relationship with Duane, searching for acceptance elsewhere.

Duane enlists in the Army, preparing for deployment in the Korean War, as Jacy pursues Sonny, prompting him to end things with Ruth and dream of a future together. The emotional turmoil leads to deep-seated conflicts between the friends.

When Duane returns on leave in a new car, tensions between him and Sonny escalate, resulting in a physical altercation that leaves Sonny injured. This moment marks a significant shift in their friendship, filled with rivalry and pain.

On the last night of Duane's leave, he and Sonny reconcile and decide to visit the old movie theater that is about to close. They share a bittersweet moment watching 'Red River,’ reminiscing about their childhood and friendship.

The following day, Sonny witnesses the tragic death of Billy, which leaves him devastated. He carries Billy's body, filled with grief and anger towards the townspeople, honoring his friend's memory in a poignant farewell.

Overwhelmed by the events, Sonny finds himself on the edge of leaving Anarene but ultimately turns back towards Ruth’s home for comfort. Their heartfelt connection blooms as they share their struggles and pain, hinting at healing.
