The Land Before Time IX: Journey to Big Water

The adult dinosaurs refuse because they fear that venturing outside the Great Valley could bring unpredictable dangers and put their entire community at risk. They believe the children would be safer staying within the valley's protected boundaries, even though it means leaving Mo stranded.

Earlier in the story, the valley has already been partially damaged by flooding, making the adults even more protective of their territory.

During the earthshake, the Sharptooth becomes trapped in an underwater cavern. This temporarily removes the threat of the predator and gives the children the opportunity to begin their journey to return Mo to his home.

The earthshake was triggered by the same geological forces that caused the flooding earlier.

The Sharptooth stops because it senses the ocean in the distance. As a creature of the sea, it is naturally drawn back to the water rather than continuing to pursue prey on land. Mo explains that the Sharptooth smells the ocean and chooses to return to its natural habitat.

Earlier scenes establish that Mo is from the Big Water, hinting at the ocean's significance to aquatic creatures.

Mo bravely distracts the Sharptooth by swimming further downstream, luring the predator away from his friends. This act of courage gives the children time to escape and continue their journey toward the ocean.

Mo's playful and brave personality is established early when he first meets Littlefoot in the flooded valley.

The children witness the miracle of baby Diplodocus hatching from their eggs. This experience fills them with wonder and hope as they see new life emerging, reinforcing the story's themes of renewal and family.

The nesting site was introduced earlier when the Diplodocus mother offered the travelers shelter for the night.

Littlefoot wanders away from his friends while they are busy with nesting duties and discovers Mo in the flooded expanse of the Great Valley. Mo, a young Ophthalmosaurus, was swept into the valley by the storm and became separated from his family.

Littlefoot's earlier longing for a brother and desire for something more than his daily routine foreshadows his meeting with Mo.

Mo asks for directions to the smoky mountains because he wants to know how to find the Great Valley again. He tells his family that the valley can be found from there, showing his hope to potentially visit his friends again in the future.

This moment closes the loop on the journey's purpose, finding a way back home, which applies to both Mo and the children.

When they reach the ocean, Mo sadly realizes his friends must leave. Littlefoot reassures him that they will always be brothers regardless of distance. Mo then rejoins his family, and before departing, he shows Littlefoot his beautiful underwater home.

The journey was specifically to return Mo to his family, making the ocean arrival the natural culmination of their quest.

Littlefoot calls Mo his mud brother as a term of endearment that reflects their friendship跨越了不同的物种和生活环境. Despite coming from very different worlds, Littlefoot from the land and Mo from the sea, they have formed a bond as close as siblings.

This term is introduced shortly after they meet, establishing the emotional foundation for their entire journey.

The Liopleurodon attacks because it is a predatory sea creature that sees the group as potential prey. The attack happens shortly after Mo explains his origins, showing the immediate danger Mo faces in the unfamiliar valley waters.

Mo's explanation that he swam into the valley during the storm sets up the threat of predatory creatures from the Big Water.

The children realize they are nearing the ocean when they begin to taste salt in the water and sense the tingling feeling of the sea in the air. This renews their hope that they are close to reaching Mo's home.
