The Kingmaker (2019) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

The film's ending leaves the audience with a reflection on Seo Chang-dae’s complex loyalty. Throughout the story, Seo is depicted as a master manipulator and strategist, driven by ambition and a desire to influence politics from behind the scenes. In the final scenes, he chooses to work with the Republican side, actively campaigning against Kim Woon-beom, the very politician he helped rise to power earlier. Seo’s participation in sabotaging Kim culminates in the re-election of the Republican president, despite the efforts of Kim and his supporters. Seo’s actions, such as planting the bomb and collaborating with the Republicans, reveal that his unwavering allegiance lies not with the politician he once admired, but with his work as a kingmaker and his own personal survival.

In the closing moments, Seo and Kim meet again in a quiet café seventeen years later, and they share a moment of nostalgia and regret. Kim expresses his wish to have changed the past, hinting at his own longing for different choices. Seo’s smile suggests a mixture of satisfaction and bittersweet emotion—he seems to acknowledge that, despite everything, his success as a strategist has come at a cost. Although their paths diverged so long ago, Seo’s final stance indicates that he ultimately prioritizes his role as a political manipulator over personal loyalty or ideology. The story ends with Seo alone in the café, gazing introspectively, leaving viewers to ponder whether he might still harbor any lingering remorse or if he truly finds peace in his relentless pursuit of power behind the scenes. Ultimately, Seo’s journey highlights the ambiguity of loyalty in politics—sometimes it is a matter of self-interest rather than genuine allegiance. The ending underscores that, in the world of political chess, the true kingmaker is often motivated by personal gain more than real loyalty.
