The Kid from the Big Apple

Sarah Lin, Sarah Tan reluctantly moves to Malaysia to stay with her grandfather, Gen Ti Lung, whom she has never met, while her mother returns to China to handle work-related problems. The situation sets up a quiet clash of cultures, as Sarah faces a world far different from her life in New York and the family dynamics that brought her here.

Initially, the routine feels alien: chicken feet for breakfast and a sense that the local community is somehow unfamiliar. Gen tries to recreate a familiar environment by cooking Western dishes with local substitutes, hoping to bridge the gap between generations. Yet Sarah clings to the potato chips she brought from New York and keeps a barrier between herself and her grandfather, resisting communication and forming a wary distance.

Defeated, Gen turns to Ah Bao, Jayson Tan, a neighbor who claims to speak English, to translate his Chinese and Cantonese instructions for Sarah. The misunderstanding of English adds humor to the moment, but it gradually helps Sarah notice the world around her. The barrier begins to soften as she admits she can actually understand Chinese, much to Gen’s relief, and she starts to pay attention to the everyday life around them.

Slowly, Sarah opens up to the neighbourhood, joining in with the local children, including Ivy Lenna Lim. She begins to participate in their games and conversations, and the connection with her grandfather deepens as they share moments of laughter and small discoveries. The evolving bond is gentle and real, even when disagreements about modern life and traditional values appear.

Between these present-day moments, flashbacks reveal the strained history between Sarah’s mother and her grandfather. Sarah’s mother, who is unmarried and pregnant with her, had a fierce argument with Gen when she decided to move to New York City to live with her boyfriend. He opposed the move, she left anyway, and she balanced life as a single mother while pursuing a career in fashion, with little contact from her father for years.

As time passes, the bond between Sarah and Gen grows stronger, tempered by the inevitable friction between Sarah’s contemporary, social-media-influenced lifestyle and her grandfather’s conservative values. Yet Sarah becomes deeply attached to the community and reluctant to leave, especially after she learns about the health ailments Gen has kept hidden from everyone.

Determined to stay connected, Sarah encourages Gen to embrace new media so they can communicate across oceans and works to bring her mother and grandfather closer, hoping for reconciliation after years of distance. The door to healing widens as they all begin to imagine a future where the family can be together again, even across borders and time.

Before she leaves, Gen asks Ah Bao to film a video for Sarah’s mother that would be delivered after his death. In the message, he apologizes for not being a better father, expresses his admiration for raising Sarah single-handedly, and hints at assets bequeathed to her. Ah Bao, breaking his promise to keep the video secret, sends it to Sarah’s mother, a moment that moves her deeply.

Touched by Gen’s words, Sarah’s mother hurriedly returns home and finally reconciles with her father after many years. The closing montage reveals that Gen flies back to New York together with Sarah and her mother, presenting a hopeful image of a family rebuilt across continents and time.
